Ontera was a telecommunications company with a wide array of expertise that ranges from IP-based solutions such as VoIP, internet, long-distance calling, and local voice calls. Ontera was acquired by Bell Canada. They offer their services throughout the entirety of Northern Ontario and have placed their roots since 1902!
Ontera made its humble beginnings by building telegraph lines linking different communities that lived along Ontario’s Northland Railways.
The headquarters of Ontera can be found at 555 Oak Street East North Bay, ON P1B 8L3. As with any other telecommunications provider, we like to put them through a rigorous test of comparisons and a deep analysis of their mainstream services.
Let us now review one of Ontera’s bread and butter internet plans to get a better idea of their commitment to their customers.
Ontera offers a residential internet plan which they call “high-speed DSL”, this plan comes with a download speed of 5.0 MBPS and upload speeds that had not been disclosed. The plan comes with an unlimited bandwidth usage cap which may always seem like an advantage but that isn’t always the case. Consumers should calculate their average internet usage on a monthly basis, perhaps a plan that is limited could work well for them and that also means it would come with a decreased price. In the case of Ontera’s unlimited plan, you’d be paying $69.95 per month which is certainly way too overpriced. In comparison to another provider like Altima, Ontera falls short on many fronts. Not only does Altima offer a cheaper plan, but it offers better services! Worldline can grant you a 6 MBPS download connection on an unlimited bandwidth for a meager only $29.95 per month!
Perhaps Ontera makes up for this overpriced plan with some over the top features that aren’t found with any other provider. However that is certainly not the case – you get the basic features that are available with any other provider as well. Furthermore, the highest speeds they have to offer are up to 10 MBPS and that plan is very overpriced. Not only was the provided information not up to par, but much information wasn’t provided at all, for example, what would the dry loop charges be, or if it would be possible to opt into additional features or not?
All in all, Ontera has a lot to make up for if they want to justify the price they are asking for. It would, however, make more sense to drive down their price to a range that would be more competitive on today’s market. The plan they offer is a bread and butter type plan for many other providers who offer it at much cheaper prices and Ontera needs to follow suit if they want satisfied customers and customer growth!
